You are on the end of the hose.

Twenty calls, each one a real building with a way in and a fire that has to be put out. The engine house training ground. A midnight alley behind a bar. The marble lobby of a hotel at two in the morning. A house fire so thick with smoke you feel your way along the wall. A subway platform, a cold store, an old church, an office tower, a tank farm, a ship’s engine room. Then the dark ones: a tower block, a multi-storey car park, a basement club, a night ward, a science block, a hay barn, a dockside shed, a theatre with a cloth burning in the flies, a road tunnel with an artic well alight, and a paper mill at the end of the night shift.

Open the bail and the line comes alive in your hands. Straight stream reaches across a room; fog pattern knocks down more but only up close. Fire eats the room above your head first, so the smoke layer drops as you work and lifts as you win. Some doors are boarded shut - the axe is on your left hip.

Every surface is built from real photographed material, every room is lit by the fire in it, and the smoke rolls along the ceiling the way it actually does.
