1. put on your own safety glasses and cotton gloves for the volcano experiment, then go out the door.

2. open the lid of the jar of sugar and add 5 spoons of sugar to the volcano model.

3. pick up the igniter and light the alcohol lamp under the volcano model

4. Hold the base of the alcohol lamp by the handle and place it inside the model.

5. Add about 2 spoons of sodium bicarbonate to the volcano model.

6. Watch the eruption. The substance that flows out of the model volcano will slowly solidify.

The chemical formula for soda is NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate). When the soda breaks down in the hot sugar, it produces carbon dioxide, which causes the sugar to swell.

7. When the soda has released some of its liquid, remove the alcohol lamp base and close the lid of the alcohol lamp.

8. open and close the lid of the alcohol lamp one more time to release the gas.
